Winnifred Ledieu, WAAF
Winifred Ledieu was born in Maypole Estate, England in May of 1924.
She was called up in June of 1942 to the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.
In school, they had us all come to assembly and announce that war had been declared.
We would get the word that there was going to be an air raid, and we would put the (barrage) balloons up.
I took a course on cameras. They were for the front front of the bomber, it would be taking pictures (of bombing runs). We had to check the oxygen because they (the bombers) flew higher. Other than that, as long as you had a screwdriver…we were busy.
How can you help VVOC?
Too many of our veterans have not had a chance to tell their story. Veterans Voices of Canada will help to ensure that all Canadian military veterans have the opportunity to talk about their personal experiences and their stories on camera.
